Our staff Designer / Illustrator / Swordsman, Sig, gives us a peek into his process.
What was your proudest achievement in the past year?
EVERYDAY is my proudest achievement. Also I finally started doing handstand pushups on a regular basis.
Professionally and personally, what are your goals for 2016?
Professionally, I would love to get a table for Artist Alley in ComiCon complete with a good body of digital works and prints to show and sell. Worst case scenario is I have a table and its just bare with me sitting there with nothing, which would also be awesome. Best case scenario is I sell everything and my banner and I’m also left with a table and its just bare with me sitting there with nothing. I also would like to teach some form of Figure Drawing class or Anatomy class very soon. Personally, I would love to get back into tip top form with all my minor personal goals as well as get into more digital plein-eir studies.
Outside of animation and design, what other hobbies are you passionate about?
I like to do some weapons based martial arts on the side and read about survival stuff. I also like to blurt out some songs with or without an audience. And muse upon spiritual things, ah yes. I play lots of games. I like to also research history stuff.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Ask yourself, “Whats the worse that can happen?” and “Am I going to regret this”, Set your future self up yo. Also don’t go to college blindly. Go to college if its only needed. I would tell myself to just take essential courses for what’s needed. Save your money and get exactly what you wish to pay for.
How do you get into the creative mood?
Music mostly. EPIC. MUSIC. Then images just come to my head as to how the music fits into the image.
What do you love most about working at ANL?
The environment, the people I work with, the projects, and their patience with me hahaha.
What do you do when you get “designer’s block”?
I sleep, a LOT, and I revisit old ideas and try to expound on them, see why they worked and how old ideas and tools can be reworked from new ones. When I start thinking about the unkown, since it doesn’t exit yet, I fall back on what already exists and build from there again. Usually It comes back to me. Sure enough those new formulated ideas become old ones to use, and springboard off of. I also look at other peoples approach, but I gather thats a given.
Who were your heroes growing up and why?
As an artist, Bob Ross holy hell the man can paint a masterpiece under pressure of a live camera.
As a designer, what are your biggest pet peeves?
When things don’t turn up how I envisioned them in my head when put on paper. Drives me insane and I start noodling, then I lose the focus.
Briefly describe your dream project.
A massively epic space or fantasy opera. Both of which I have in my head.
What is your spirit animal, and why?
Apparently I’m an owl because I just took an online quiz and it said so
